A high-profile commander of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), identified as Ibn Ali, has surrendered to troops of the Nigerian military in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, marking a major breakthrough in the ongoing counter-terrorism operations across the country.
The military, in its weekly report of operations conducted between June 30 and July 10, said Ibn Ali surrendered alongside a cache of weapons and ammunition as sustained offensives in the North-East forced several insurgents to lay down their arms.
“Troops neutralised scores of Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists in Sambisa Forest, the Timbuktu Triangle, and other flashpoints,” the report stated.
In the South-South, Operation Delta Safe troops thwarted oil theft valued at over ₦263.8 million. Recovered items included 198,482 litres of stolen crude oil, 63,846 litres of illegally refined diesel, nine boats, and explosives. Eight suspects were arrested and 15 illegal refineries destroyed.
In the North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA recorded successes in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Katsina states, where terrorists were eliminated in joint air and ground strikes. Five suspects were arrested, two kidnapped victims rescued, and ₦28,720 recovered.
Troops under Operation Safe Haven in Plateau and Kaduna States killed extremists, arrested 18 suspects, and rescued seven victims. Weapons, motorcycles, and a fabricated AK-47 rifle were recovered during routine patrols.
Similarly, Operation Whirl Stroke troops neutralised extremists in Benue, Taraba, Nasarawa, and Kogi States. A notorious kingpin, Liamdoo Douglas Adekpe (aka Bajor), was arrested in Taraba with weapons. Two kidnapped victims were also rescued.
In the South-East, troops of Operation UDO KA arrested six suspected IPOB/ESN operatives and a logistics supplier. Cash, POS machines, and phones were recovered in Anambra and Imo States.
Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye said the operations reflect the military’s commitment to restoring peace. “We urge Nigerians to support security efforts by reporting suspicious activities. Together, we will secure our country,” he said.
