The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, has announced a total restriction of movement across Lagos for the local government election on Saturday, July 12, 2025.
“The general public in Lagos State [is hereby informed] of total restriction of vehicular movement throughout Lagos State from 3 am… till 3 pm,” Jimoh said in a statement by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin on Wednesday.
He explained that this measure, agreed upon with the Consultative Committee on Elections Security and other stakeholders, aims to ensure “adequate security, peaceful conduct and safety before, during and after the election.”
To guarantee a smooth exercise, the commissioner revealed that “elaborate security arrangements and comprehensive security measures have been put in place” with personnel massively deployed across the state.
He stressed that police escorts and armed security aides “are strictly prohibited from accompanying their principals to polling units or collation centres,” adding, “Police escorts, covered number plates, and the use of sirens… are prohibited” to prevent intimidation and undue influence during voting.
Jimoh clarified that only vehicles providing essential services — ambulances, fire trucks, and security patrols — will be exempt from the lockdown, alongside accredited LASIEC officials, election observers, and journalists.
“All other vehicles… are barred from movement,” he warned, noting that “no state-owned security agency is authorised to participate” outside the approved inter-agency framework.
He concluded, “Anyone arrested without an identification tag will be investigated and prosecuted in line with the Electoral Act.”
