The Lagos State Government has sealed Global International College, a private institution in Lekki, for allegedly breaching environmental regulations that pose a threat to public health.
In a statement released by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the government revealed that untreated faecal sludge and wastewater were being discharged from the school premises into nearby areas, causing a strong stench and discomfort for residents.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, explained that the school had channelled the unsanitary waste through a pumping system directly into the drainage network, which contravenes the state’s environmental standards.
“The enforcement was carried out on Saturday after multiple warnings to the school management were ignored,” Wahab said.
Wahab further warned that the state would not hesitate to penalise violators of environmental laws, including educational institutions.
“All environmental nuisance and pollution portends grave dangers to public health and will be met with appropriate sanctions and/or prosecution,” he stressed, adding that the government remains committed to safeguarding the well-being of Lagos residents.
