No fewer than 1,209 houses have been destroyed by flash floods in Damboa and Chibok local government areas of Borno State, following days of torrential rainfall.
The Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), which conducted a rapid assessment, confirmed the destruction on Thursday across Gumsuri, Garjang, and Wovi in Damboa; as well as Mboa, Whuntaku, and Yarchida in Chibok.
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum had earlier directed the agency to assess and respond promptly to affected communities. He also expressed deep sympathy to those impacted by the disaster.
“I received with profound sorrow the sad news of the devastating flood disaster… My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and all those affected,” the governor said in a statement.
Acting Director-General of SEMA, Ali Abdullahi Isa, said, “A total of 1,103 houses were affected in Damboa, and 106 in Chibok.”
Relief items were also delivered to victims of a separate windstorm in Rumirgo town, Askira-Uba LGA. Isa prayed for divine protection against future occurrences.
