The Kano State Government has intensified its fight against open defecation, adding six more local government areas—Sumaila, Tudun Wada, Doguwa, Tofa, Bunkure, and Garun Malam—to its sanitation campaign.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mustapha Muhammad, in a statement on Sunday, said, “This brings the number of LGAs participating in the campaign to 26, with 15 already certified as Open Defecation Free (ODF).”

The campaign, led by RUWASA under the Ministry of Rural and Urban Development, is supported by UNICEF. The state has distributed improved latrine covers, hand-washing kits, and educational materials.

RUWASA’s Managing Director, Engr. Shamwilu Abdulkadir Isa, said, “We are not just distributing materials — we are changing behaviour. This is not a job for government alone.”

He praised Governor Yusuf’s support, adding, “Without political will, we wouldn’t be here. His Excellency’s commitment has been unwavering.”

Certificates will soon be issued to LGAs that meet ODF standards.
