A report by the General Household Survey (GHS) 2023/2024 has revealed that nearly half of Nigerian households were forced to skip meals because they could not afford food.
According to the survey published on its website, 48.1% of households across the country reported skipping meals due to lack of money.
The South-east recorded the highest share, with 62.4% of households affected. This was followed by the South-south at 59.6%, and the South-west at 50.1%. In the North-east, 48.3% of households skipped meals, while the North-west and North-central recorded 37% and 34% respectively.
The report also showed a significant divide between urban and rural areas. In urban centres, 53.5% of households had to forgo meals, compared to 45.6% in rural communities.
The findings highlight the widespread impact of economic hardship on food security across all regions of the country.
