In a fresh safety alert, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned Nigerians against the use and distribution of certain Dove products recently banned in Brussels, Belgium, over safety concerns.
According to Public Alert No. 018/2025 issued on Sunday, the European Union (EU) has prohibited the marketing and sale of Dove Hand Soap (100g) and Dove Deodorant after they were found to contain a toxic substance—2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde, also known as Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA).
NAFDAC echoed the EU’s concerns, explaining that BMHCA is banned in cosmetic products because of its potential to harm the reproductive system, negatively affect the health of unborn children, and cause skin sensitization.
“These products are not only unsafe but are also not listed on the NAFDAC database,” the agency stated. “The presence of Butylphenyl Methylpropional poses significant health risks and violates the Cosmetic Products Regulation.”
The agency emphasized that the importation of soaps is currently prohibited in Nigeria, as they are listed among items on the government’s Import Prohibition List and also ineligible for foreign exchange access under current Central Bank policy.
NAFDAC urged importers, distributors, and retailers to exercise extreme caution and avoid the circulation of these banned products within the Nigerian market.
“Members of the public in possession of Dove Hand Soap or Dove Deodorant should immediately discontinue use and submit any remaining stock to the nearest NAFDAC office,” the statement said.
Consumers and healthcare professionals are also encouraged to report any adverse reactions linked to these or other regulated products. Reports can be submitted through pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng, the agency’s website (nafdac.gov.ng), or via the Med Safety App, available on Android and iOS platforms.
The warning is part of NAFDAC’s broader effort to protect public health by monitoring and responding to international product recalls and bans.
