The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has refuted claims suggesting that a viral video of a shooting incident involving its operatives is a recent event.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Service’s spokesperson, Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, the NCS clarified that the incident captured in the video took place on February 17, 2019, at the Shagamu Interchange in Ogun State.

“The NCS wishes to categorically state that the incident in question occurred on Sunday, 17 February 2019, and not a recent development,” the statement read.

The Service explained that immediate disciplinary action was taken following the incident, including a full investigation and the dismissal of the officers found guilty.

“A public statement was issued at the time, and a disciplinary panel was established… At the end of the process, appropriate sanctions were applied,” the NCS emphasized. It urged the public not to spread outdated or misleading content and to instead verify information through official channels.

Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, the NCS stated that it would not tolerate misconduct by its personnel.

“The NCS is a statutory government agency guided by rules of engagement,” the statement said, adding that under Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi’s leadership, the Service has strengthened internal controls and expanded training to ensure transparency and integrity.
