At least nine passengers were killed on Sunday in Mairari village, Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State, when Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted by Boko Haram terrorists detonated at a local bus stop.
The village, located about 18km from Monguno and 119km from Maiduguri, was the scene of the tragic explosion that also left several others injured and receiving treatment in hospitals in Monguno and Maiduguri.
Confirming the incident, Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan, described the attack as inhumane. “May Allah grant their souls Aljanatul Firdaus,” he said, urging swift military intervention to reclaim Guzamala LGA from terrorist control.
Lawan noted that Mairari, previously resettled twice, has once again been deserted due to relentless Boko Haram/ISWAP attacks. He emphasized that the area’s residents, mostly displaced and currently taking refuge in Monguno and Maiduguri, often return to farm—making them vulnerable.
He commended the efforts of Operation Hadin Kai troops under the newly deployed Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, but reiterated the urgent need for the full military takeover of Guzamala to restore civil authority and protect returning civilians.
