At least 151 people have been confirmed dead due to the severe flooding triggered by heavy rainfall in Mokwa, a market town in Niger State, north-central Nigeria.
The spokesman for the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, to Ibrahim Audu Husseini confirmed the casualties on Saturday.
Authorities say the death toll may rise as efforts to reach remote areas continue.
Audu also disclosed that the disaster which struck in the early hours of Friday, has displaced over 3,000 residents and affected at least 500 households across three communities.
Scenes from the affected areas showed homes submerged with only rooftops visible, and residents wading through waist-deep floodwaters.
The town, located over 300 kilometers west of Abuja, is grappling with the aftermath of the deluge as emergency responders continue rescue and recovery operations.
