The Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) has lauded the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for its outstanding contribution to the development of women’s sports across Africa, following the successful hosting of the 39th CAVB Women’s African Volleyball Club Championship in Abuja.
The championship, held from April 1 to 14, 2025, marked a significant milestone as it was the first time in years that the tournament was hosted outside North Africa. The CAVB described the Abuja edition as a “historic milestone” and praised the NCS for setting “a new benchmark in sports hosting.”
In a formal letter addressed to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, CAVB President Bouchra Hajij commended the Customs Service for its commitment to corporate social responsibility and inclusive development.
“Under the visionary leadership of the Nigeria Customs Service, the tournament not only celebrated athletic excellence but also redefined what inclusive and transformative sports hosting looks like across Africa,” Hajij said.
The Nigeria Customs was credited for more than just organizing the event. The CAVB highlighted the Service’s provision of world-class facilities, efficient logistics, and an energetic atmosphere that inspired both players and fans.
“The NCS’s strategic planning and generosity were crucial to the championship’s success,” Hajij added. “Their unwavering support for women and youth empowerment through sport offers a model that other institutions across Africa can emulate.”
A statement issued by the National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, emphasized that the event exemplified how sports can transcend competition to become a catalyst for social transformation.
The CAVB also described the NCS as “an ample and able partner of African Volleyball,” expressing hope that the 2025 tournament would serve as a legacy model for future events across the continent.
In his response, Comptroller-General Adeniyi reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to supporting youth empowerment and national pride through sport.
“The Nigeria Customs Service remains committed to platforms that promote inclusion, youth development, and the positive global projection of Nigeria,” the statement read. “We extend sincere appreciation to all stakeholders, partners, and members of the public whose support made the event a resounding success.”
