The Chief Medical Director, Our Mother Theresa Specialist Hospital and Fertility Centre in Asaba, Dr. Charles Uhioh, has described infertility as a growing global health challenge affecting roughly 15 percent of the world’s population.
He made the disclosure at the 20th anniversary celebration of the hospital in Asaba, Delta State, while adressing journalists.
He broke down the causes: “In another 30 percent of cases, the issue lies with the female partner. In yet another 30 percent, both partners have fertility challenges. The remaining 10 percent falls under what we call ‘unexplained infertility.’”
He emphasized that men are solely responsible in about 30 percent of cases.
Despite these figures, Dr. Uhioh highlighted the progress being made through advancements in fertility medicine.
“Our slogan is, ‘Every Woman is a Mother,’ and we are committed to women’s health, fertility care, and holistic well-being,” he stated.
He credited medical technology and improved access to treatment with easing the burden of infertility worldwide.
The hospital, with branches in Lagos, Delta, and Edo States, has brought joy to over 6,000 families globally through In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and other fertility services.
Reflecting on two decades of service, Dr. Uhioh expressed deep gratitude and humility. “I feel elated and very happy celebrating the grace of God. When we look back at where we started and where we are now, we have every reason to be thankful,” he said.
“We started from absolutely nothing, and today, by God’s grace, we have been able to touch lives across continents. It’s been a journey of faith and service”, he concluded.
The celebration drew staff, patients, and families whose lives have been transformed through the Centre’s work.
