Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully repelled a coordinated assault by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on Damboa town in Borno State, neutralizing at least 16 terrorists in a fierce gun battle that began in the early hours of Friday.

According to a statement by Lieutenant Colonel Ajemasu Yake Jingina, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, the ISWAP fighters launched a bold attack from the Azir Bridge axis, targeting the 25 Task Force Brigade Area of Responsibility.

In response, Nigerian Army troops swiftly mounted a robust counter-offensive supported by heavy artillery fire. The Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI also conducted precise airstrikes, effectively decimating the ranks of the attackers and forcing their retreat.

“At least 16 ISWAP fighters were neutralized in the confrontation,” the statement confirmed. However, the Army also reported the loss of two soldiers who paid the supreme price while defending the nation.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity and pledged to sustain the tempo of counter-insurgency operations aimed at ending terrorism in the Northeast.

“The troops remain resolute and continue to demonstrate high morale in all engagements,” said Lt. Col. Jingina.

Operation HADIN KAI has been instrumental in ongoing efforts to degrade ISWAP’s capabilities in the region, with recent weeks witnessing a series of offensives targeting terrorist hideouts.

The Army further assured residents of its unwavering dedication to protecting civilians and restoring lasting peace to communities affected by insurgency.

The successful defense of Damboa is seen as a significant morale boost to the troops and a strong message to terrorist groups operating in the region.
