In a move aimed at curbing corruption and ensuring transparency in the health sector, the Federal Government has launched a joint assessment of the ongoing revitalization of Primary Health Care (PHC) centres across Nigeria.
The exercise, which is being carried out by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), is expected to track the effective utilization of public funds allocated for PHC infrastructure under the Renewed Hope Initiative of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking on the development in a statement on Friday, the Executive Director of the NPHCDA, Dr. Muyi Aina, said the assessment highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring value for money and enhancing healthcare services at the grassroots level.
“This partnership with ICPC is part of our strategy to strengthen accountability in health spending and ensure Nigerians see the results of government investments in primary health care,” Dr. Aina stated.
The move follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed in March 2025 between the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, and ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN. The agreement was designed to foster inter-agency collaboration in monitoring healthcare funding and project implementation.
ICPC Chairman, Dr. Aliyu, described the collaboration as “a significant step toward ensuring that every naira spent in the health sector yields visible impact.”
The joint assessment will involve field verification of revitalized PHCs, financial audits, and evaluation of community impact, according to officials familiar with the initiative.
Health sector analysts have praised the move, citing long-standing issues of abandoned projects and misappropriation of funds in previous revitalization efforts.
