The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) has declared a sweeping enforcement operation across Abuja to clamp down on traffic violations, particularly the dangerous trend of driving against traffic and disobeying traffic signals.
In a statement released by the Director of DRTS, Abdulateef Bello, on Friday the agency expressed deep concern over the alarming rate of reckless driving practices threatening lives and order on the roads of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
“Motorists driving against traffic and violating red lights have become a grave menace to public safety,” Bello stated. “These are serious offences under the FCT Road Transport Regulations 2023 (Regulation 18, Nos. 172–173), and we will not tolerate them.”
According to the director, the DRTS, in collaboration with the FCT Transportation Secretariat, has commenced a rigorous citywide enforcement campaign. Offenders will have their vehicles immediately impounded and face prosecution before a Mobile Court.
“Our objective is clear: to restore sanity, safeguard lives, and ensure the free flow of traffic within Abuja. This renewed enforcement is not just a routine exercise—it is a decisive step toward reclaiming our roads from lawlessness,” Bello emphasized.
He also reiterated the agency’s commitment to sustained enforcement and public education on traffic rules, warning that violators should expect no leniency going forward.
“The era of impunity is over,” Bello said. “The DRTS is determined to uphold the law and make Abuja’s roads safer for everyone.”
