Again, Building Collapses in Lagos, 3 Injured as Rescue Operations Continue

Three adult males sustained injuries after a one-storey building under construction collapsed on Sunday afternoon at 96 Ishaga Road, directly opposite the Idi Araba Central Mosque in Mushin, Lagos State.

Confirming the incident, the spokesman for the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Shakiru Amodu, said, “A male adult has been rescued while efforts are ongoing to rescue other victims trapped under the rubble.”

Africa Health Report (AHR) gathered that the building was still at the one-storey level when it came crashing down, with three individuals pulled from the debris and receiving emergency care before being taken to a hospital by the Lagos State Ambulance Service.

Multiple emergency agencies, including the Isolo Fire Station, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the Nigeria Police, and medical personnel, swiftly responded to the scene.

While rescue operations continue and officials comb through the rubble, the cause of the collapse remains unknown.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what led to the structural failure. “Search and rescue operations are ongoing as officials continue to assess the site,” Amodu noted.

This incident comes barely a month after a similar tragedy occurred on April 19, when a three-storey building on Oremeta Street in Ojodu-Berger collapsed, killing one person and injuring several others.

Eyewitnesses who spoke with our correspondent said that structure, which housed a local restaurant, also showed signs of instability while still under construction.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the building gave way shortly after restaurant staff had arrived.

The recurring nature of these collapses has raised serious concerns about construction standards and regulatory oversight in Lagos.
