Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has called on residents of the state to observe a voluntary fast on Monday, seeking divine intervention amid a surge in violent attacks across the region.

The governor made the appeal in a statewide broadcast on Saturday, urging citizens to unite in prayer and reflection for peace to reign in Borno and the country at large.

“In light of our current security challenges, I am calling on all residents of Borno State to unite in a collective act of faith and solidarity,” Zulum stated. “This Monday, I invite you to join me in fasting and prayer for peace across Borno, the Northeast, and Nigeria.”

This comes as suspected terrorists again, killed at least 50 farmers in Malam Karanti village, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria.

The terrorists suspected to be members of the dreaded Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants, ISWAP, reportedly laid an ambush and killed their victims on Thursday.

The attack occurred approximately 9 kilometers from Baga town, in an area controlled by ISWAP.

Local sources reported that the farmers and fishermen had previously negotiated with an ISWAP faction, paying levies to access farmland in the Lake Chad Basin.

However, another ISWAP group, unaware of this arrangement, accused the farmers of collaborating with rival factions and opened fire, killing dozens.

Survivors recounted that the militants gathered the victims before executing them, leaving only an elderly man alive, who later alerted others.

Zulum emphasised that fasting symbolizes communal resilience, shared hope, and unity, adding that the spiritual act would strengthen the people’s resolve to overcome insecurity.

Alongside the spiritual appeal, the governor announced that the state government is collaborating with the Federal Government to review and strengthen security architecture.

He said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and all service chiefs have assured full support to address the security situation.

“We are working on comprehensive strategies to strengthen our security framework, improve intelligence sharing, and equip our forces with necessary tools,” he said.

He also pledged to reinforce the Civilian Joint Task Force, hunters, and vigilantes, while warning communities against collaborating with armed groups.

On urban security, the governor announced the reconstitution of the Anti-Social Vices Committee to curb rising crime in Maiduguri.
