In a firm move to uphold academic integrity, Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, has rusticated 34 medical students for two to four semesters over examination malpractices during the 2022/2023 session.

According to a statement signed by Deputy Registrar (Senate), F.O. Omoigui, for Acting Registrar, and Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, Principal Assistant Registrar (Information and Public Relations), the affected students, mostly in their 300 and 500 levels, were disciplined following investigations by the Mobile Students Disciplinary Committee.

“The university management, after due consideration of the reports submitted by the Mobile Disciplinary Committee (College of Medicine), has approved the penalties recommended for the offences committed,” the bulletin stated.

The offences ranged from smuggling unauthorized materials into examination halls to impersonating fellow students. Specifically, the report highlighted cases during examinations such as HAE 503 and 401, where students were caught using pre-written answers or switching identities.

The disciplinary panel’s findings led to the rustication of 21 students for two semesters and 13 others for four semesters, with departments affected including Hematology, Histopathology, Medical Microbiology, and Medicine and Surgery.

However, the institution also noted a measure of leniency, exonerating six students from allegations, advising two to be of good behaviour, and cautioning one.

Meanwhile, in a related development, Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijebu-Ode, recently announced the rustication of 31 students and the indefinite suspension of 47 others over various academic and behavioural misconducts.

The Registrar, Dapo Oke, disclosed this in a statement last September, emphasizing the university’s resolve after thorough investigations by the Examination Malpractice and Students’ Disciplinary Committee.

“The university has further suspended 47 students indefinitely for various forms of misconduct, including impersonation,” the statement read, underscoring a zero-tolerance stance on academic dishonesty.

Both universities reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining strict academic standards. AAU reminded its students that breaches of examination regulations would attract stiff penalties, while TASUED warned sanctioned students to stay off-campus to avoid confrontations with security personnel.

As institutions nationwide tighten discipline frameworks, the message is clear: academic integrity remains non-negotiable.
