Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the provision of free medication for children at Marmara Maternity Hospital. The initiative is designed to complement the ongoing free services at Hasiya Bayero Paediatrics Hospital and to expand access to quality healthcare for children across the state.

In an official statement issued Thursday by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Hospitals Management Board, Samirah Sulaiman, the government also announced that the Paediatrics Ward has been officially attached to Marmara Maternity Hospital to enhance its capacity.

“This commendable step reaffirms the Governor’s dedication to child health and welfare in Kano State,” Sulaiman said. “By making essential drugs freely available at Marmara Maternity Hospital, we are not only easing the burden on parents but also ensuring that more children survive and thrive.”

A senior pediatrician at Hasiya Bayero Paediatrics Hospital, Dr Aisha Ahmed described the move as a lifesaving intervention. “This is a major boost for child healthcare in Kano. Many families cannot afford routine medications, so this policy will go a long way in saving lives and promoting health equity,” she said.

Local residents have begun to express their appreciation. “My son was treated last month at Marmara, and the cost of drugs was a huge concern,” said Zainab Muhammad, a resident of Hotoro. “Now, knowing that medication will be free gives us peace of mind.”

Health policy analyst Malam Idris Bala praised the integration of services. “Governor Yusuf is demonstrating a people-centered leadership model. Linking the paediatrics ward to a maternity facility is a smart integration that ensures continuity of care from birth through early childhood,” he noted.

Governor Yusuf’s administration has consistently emphasized healthcare as a top priority, particularly for women and children. The latest development is seen as part of broader efforts to build a more inclusive and efficient healthcare system across Kano State.
