The Vatican has announced the funeral of Pope Francis will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City.
According to a statement released by the Holy See Press Office on Tuesday, the Mass will be presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, and concelebrated by patriarchs, cardinals, archbishops, bishops, and priests from around the world.
The statement noted that the Eucharistic celebration will conclude with the Ultima commendatio and the Valedictio. Following the rites, Pope Francis’ body will be taken into St. Peter’s Basilica and then to the Basilica of St. Mary Major for entombment.
Ahead of the funeral, the coffin containing the Pope’s body will be moved from the chapel of Casa Santa Marta to St. Peter’s Basilica. The rite of translation will be presided over by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, on Wednesday, April 23, beginning at 9:00 a.m. with a prayer.
Pope Francis died on Easter Monday at 7:35 a.m. at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, Vatican City. His passing was officially announced by Cardinal Farrell.
