Hussaini Kafi in Kano
Health authorities in Kano State have confirmed a case of Lassa fever at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH).
The confirmed case involves a patient from Garun Mallam Local Government Area who was admitted after presenting symptoms consistent with the viral infection.
Out of two suspected cases brought to AKTH, one tested positive and has since been transferred to the hospital’s Infection Prevention and Control Unit for isolation and treatment.
In a separate but related development, eight individuals have died over the past three weeks in Taka-Lafiya village, located in Tudun-Wada Local Government Area, from what is suspected to be Lassa fever. Blood samples from some of the deceased were sent to a diagnostic laboratory in Lagos, with at least one confirmed positive for the virus.
In response, the Kano State Ministry of Health has activated rapid response teams and reopened isolation centers to manage both suspected and confirmed cases of the disease.
Authorities are urging residents to observe strict hygiene practices, avoid contact with rodents, and report any symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or unexplained bleeding to the nearest health facility.
The state remains on high alert as surveillance and community awareness efforts are intensified to curb the spread of the hemorrhagic fever.
