Boko Haram terrorists launched a deadly attack on a Nigerian Army base in Izge town, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, in the early hours of Sunday, reports say.
According to a security source who spoke with Daily Trust, a military officer with the rank of Captain and a Corporal were among those killed during the assault. However, the troops reportedly killed several insurgents in the ensuing gun battle.
The Chairman of Gwoza Local Government Area, Hon. Abba Kawu Idrissa Timta, confirmed the incident but said the full extent of casualties on both sides was yet to be ascertained at the time of contact. He, however, confirmed that many of the attackers were killed.
Eyewitnesses said a large number of the attackers stormed the army base on motorcycles, launching rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) at the troops before engaging in fierce combat.
Initially, the attackers appeared to gain an upper hand, but local hunters and vigilante groups joined the soldiers in mounting a strong resistance, eventually forcing the terrorists to retreat.
Sources say the military, in collaboration with local hunters and determined residents, are still pursuing the fleeing attackers believed to be heading toward the Sambisa Forest.
Security operations in the area remain ongoing as authorities assess the situation and reinforce security in surrounding communities.
