The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the petition seeking to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, has failed to meet the constitutional requirements.

In a statement released on Thursday, INEC clarified that the petition did not fulfil the necessary legal provisions to proceed with the recall process.

The commission made this declaration after reviewing the petition against the criteria outlined in the Nigerian Constitution.

Sharing the update on its official X page, INEC explicitly referenced Section 69(a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) as the basis for its decision.

The electoral body emphasized that any recall effort must strictly adhere to constitutional guidelines.

“The petition for the recall of the Senator representing the Kogi Central Senatorial District has not met the requirement of Section 69(a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended),” INEC stated.

This development puts an end to the recall attempt against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, at least for now. The senator, who has been an influential figure in Kogi Central politics, has yet to publicly respond to INEC’s decision.

However, the failure of the recall petition signals that her mandate remains intact unless a new petition that meets constitutional requirements emerges.
