President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Alhaji Abbas Sunusi, the Galadiman Kano and senior kingmaker of the Kano Emirate.
Sunusi, who passed away at the age of 92 after a protracted illness, was a revered figure in Kano’s traditional institution.
He is survived by many children and grandchildren, including Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, the Kano State chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described the late kingmaker as a “strong pillar of the traditional institution, its survival, and development.”
He noted that Sunusi’s contributions, which spanned over six decades, would be appreciated far beyond Kano Emirate and Kano State.
The President extended his condolences to the government and people of Kano State, the Kano Emirate Council, and the bereaved family. He prayed for Allah to admit the late Galadima into Jannatul Firdaus and to comfort his family.
Sunusi’s legacy in the Kano Emirate began in 1959 when his father, Emir Sanusi I, appointed him as Sarkin Dawakin Tsakar Gida and District Head of Ungogo. His influence grew under successive emirs, rising to Dan Iyan Kano in 1962, Wambai of Kano under Emir Ado Bayero, and later Galadiman Kano under Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.
A widely respected traditional leader, Sunusi was laid to rest on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, following a funeral prayer at the Emir’s Palace, Kofar Kudu, Kano. Dignitaries, traditional rulers, and hundreds of mourners attended the solemn ceremony.
His passing marks the end of an era in the Kano Emirate, leaving behind a rich legacy of service and leadership.
