The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has detained 51 undocumented migrants in New Nyanya, located in the Karu Local Council of Nasarawa State, raising fears that they could be victims of human trafficking and smuggling.
NIS Public Relations Officer, ACI A.S. Akinlabi, on Wednesday, confirmed the news, stating that 40 males and 11 females were apprehended in their hiding places following reliable intelligence.
Akinlabi indicated that initial inquiries propose these individuals might have been trafficked or smuggled into the nation.
He also revealed that none of the individuals who were arrested had valid travel documents or evidence of legal residency.
He stated that they were unable to produce any valid documentation when asked.
The NIS has placed the migrants in custody for further profiling and investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding their arrival in Nigeria.
