Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has implemented significant actions following the violent murder of travelers in Uromi, located in the Esan North East Local Government Area. He has dissolved illegal vigilante groups and suspended the head of the Edo State Security Corps.
Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, On Sunday, conveyed the governor’s swift actions in a statement, emphasizing that these measures were essential following an assessment of initial reports regarding the horrific attack.
Okpebholo, has indicated that the vigilante group involved in the murders was acting without official authorization. He noted, “This group was not recognized or registered with the Edo State Security Corps,” stressing that their activities did not align with the security goals of the administration.
The government of Edo State has also announced that security forces have apprehended 14 individuals as suspects, and efforts are ongoing to locate additional suspects. The Inspector General of Police has sent a special investigative team to take charge of the situation.
He mentioned that they are consistently in touch with the victims’ families, community leaders, and the Kano State Government, which is thought to be where many of the victims originated. He also urged the public to remain calm as the government works to pursue justice transparently.
