The Abia State government has reinstated sanitary inspectors to oversee toilets, gutters, and other environmental spaces across the state.

This initiative aligns with the administration’s commitment to public health and environmental hygiene.

According to the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Alex Otti on Environment, Professor Ijeoma Iheukwumere, “the measure is part of the cleanliness policy of the state government aimed at ensuring sound health for Abians.”

She urged residents to maintain cleanliness in their homes and surroundings to prevent diseases caused by mosquitoes and rodents.

During the latest monthly clean-up exercise, the Permanent Secretary of the Abia State Ministry of Environment, Ikechukwu Oriuwa, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna, noted that the event saw an impressive turnout.

He warned that stricter measures would be introduced next month against those who fail to comply with sanitation regulations.

As enforcement continues, authorities remain dedicated to improving environmental standards in the state.

As part of the ongoing sanitation drive, 34 defaulters were arrested by the government task force and arraigned before a mobile court led by Magistrate Onyinyechi Ibekwe.

“Thirty of the defaulters were fined, while four others were freed based on their health conditions,” reports confirmed.

Additionally, during the exercise, a man was injured in a hit-and-run accident at Eket Street by Umuwaya Road and was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment.

Authorities continue to enforce sanitation laws while ensuring public safety.
