Hussaini Kafi in Kano
The Kano Emirate, under the leadership of His Royal Highness, Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, has suspended the traditional Eid-el-Fitr Durbar for this year.
The development was contained in a statement by the Emir’s spokesperson, Abubakar Balarabe Kofar Naisa, which was made available to Africa Health Report, AHR, on Wednesday evening.
According to the statement, the decision was reached after careful consultations and considerations of certain factors.
Emir Aminu Ado Bayero explained that after receiving advice and appeals from community leaders, parents, Islamic scholars, and discussions with the Emirate Council, it became necessary to suspend the Eid Durbar for this year.
“After receiving advice and appeals from community leaders, parents, and Islamic scholars, I recognized that the continuation of the Eid Durbar could risk public disturbance; hence, its suspension is essential for our collective peace,” the Emir stated.
He emphasized that the Hawan Sallah (Eid procession) is not a do-or-die affair, and if its continuation could lead to disturbances or threaten peace, it is better to put it on hold.
“I have always believed that the Hawan Sallah is not a do-or-die affair; it must be conducted in a manner that preserves the well-being and security of our community,” he noted.
The Emir reaffirmed his commitment to protecting the people, stressing that security and peace must always come first.
“As the Emir of Kano, I have taken an oath to protect the faith, dignity, wealth, and peace of the people. It is in this spirit that I have deemed it necessary to take this step to prevent any situation that could lead to tension or insecurity,” he said.
He appealed to the people of Kano and well-wishers of the emirate to accept the decision with patience, emphasizing that it was made in the best interest of peace and stability in Kano State and Nigeria at large.
“I urge all citizens to accept this decision with patience and use the festive period to reinforce bonds of unity and peace, ensuring that our traditions are honoured without compromising safety,” the Emir added.
The Emir further urged citizens to use the festive period to strengthen bonds by visiting one another and fostering unity.
He also congratulated the Muslim community on successfully completing the Ramadan fast and prayed for divine blessings, forgiveness, and acceptance of their supplications.
