The Kano State Police Command has assured residents of adequate security ahead of the Eid-el-Fitr Sallah celebrations, as two rival emirs plan to hold parallel Durbar festivities.

The development has raised concerns about potential clashes, prompting the police to intensify security measures across the state.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, made this known on Tuesday during a meeting with the Kano State Coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC).

The delegation, led by Dr. Musa Sufi and Amb. Comrade Ali Hassan Tudun Bayero, had visited the command to express concerns over the possibility of violence during the celebrations.

“In light of the current security concerns in the state, the Police Command is aware that certain groups plan to hold parallel celebrations, which may raise tension and lead to violent clashes,” CP Bakori said.

“To mitigate this risk, the Police Command, in liaison with other security agencies, is re-strategizing, making consultations, and weighing various options to ensure that law and order are maintained.”

With the rivalry between the two emirs fuelling political and traditional tensions in Kano, fears have grown that their separate Durbar celebrations could spark unrest among their supporters.

The police, however, insist that they will not allow any breakdown of law and order.

As Muslim faithful prepare for the festivities, the police have urged residents to prioritize peace and remain vigilant. CP Bakori called on the public to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or via the emergency hotlines provided by the command.

Furthermore, the command emphasized the need for religious and community leaders to play an active role in calming tensions and ensuring a peaceful celebration.

“We must prioritize peace above everything else, putting aside our differences and coming together as one people for the progress of the state and the nation at large,” the police commissioner added.

The assurance from the police comes amid heightened political and traditional divisions in Kano, with the two emirs – backed by opposing factions – set to lead separate Durbar processions.

The police, however, have warned that they will not tolerate any attempt to disrupt public peace.

As security agencies ramp up their efforts, all eyes remain on Kano to see whether the celebrations will proceed without incident or further escalate the lingering tensions in the state.
