NLC, TUC Reject State of Emergency in Rivers, Demand Reversal

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have strongly condemned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it unconstitutional and a threat to democracy.

In a joint statement signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and TUC President Festus Osifo, the labour unions described the suspension of the state governor, deputy governor, and House of Assembly as an unlawful power grab. They warned that such actions set a dangerous precedent, eroding constitutional governance and undermining the autonomy of subnational governments.

The unions urged the President to revoke the declaration in line with Section 305(6) of the 1999 Constitution, stressing that no democracy can survive if elected leaders can be arbitrarily removed. They also warned that the emergency rule would have severe economic consequences, including business closures, job losses, and increased insecurity in Rivers State.

Accusing the government of political overreach, the NLC and TUC said they would not remain silent while workers’ livelihoods and democratic institutions were threatened. They urged the President to uphold democratic principles and reverse the decision immediately.
