Security forces in Katsina State have successfully rescued 84 captives from terrorist enclaves in Kankara Local Government Area following a coordinated military operation.
The operation, carried out by troops of the 17 Brigade in collaboration with the Air Component of Operation Forest Sanity, also led to the neutralization of three terrorists, while others fled with injuries.
According to a press release by the Katsina State Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, the operation began on March 18 at approximately 9:00 a.m. with a deliberate advance into the stronghold of notorious terrorist leader Sanusi Dutsin-Ma in the Pauwa Highlands.
The offensive involved precision air strikes on identified targets while ground troops maneuvered into the terrorists’ hideouts.
Security forces engaged terrorists at Malori and Matalawa villages, pushing them deeper into the hills before reaching Sanusi Dutsin-Ma’s camp at about 3:09 p.m.
A fierce gun battle ensued, lasting until 4:30 p.m., resulting in the neutralization of three terrorists. Several others managed to escape with gunshot wounds.
The operation successfully freed 84 hostages, including seven men, 23 women, and 54 children, who had been held captive in the terrorist camps. The troops also destroyed pairs of camouflage uniforms and other suspicious items found at the scene.
Following the rescue, the victims were given immediate food assistance and later handed over to local authorities for further care and reunification with their families.
Commending the security forces, the Katsina State Government praised their professionalism in executing the mission without any casualties on the government side.
“This successful operation demonstrates our commitment to restoring peace and security across Katsina State,” the statement read. “The rescue of these innocent civilians, especially the children, underscores the relentless efforts of security agencies in combating terrorism.”
The Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs reaffirmed Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s commitment to supporting security agencies in their mission to eliminate criminal elements and ensure the safety of all residents in the state.
Dr. Nasir Mu’azu, the State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, assured that the government would continue to intensify efforts in the fight against terrorism and banditry in Katsina State.
