Sowore Alleges More Threats Face NYSC Member Who Criticised Tinubu

Lagos-based National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ushie Uguamaye, is reportedly facing threats from political figures after a viral video in which she criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration over economic hardship.

Human rights activist and #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore, revealed that senators and other influential figures have been pressuring her to retract her statements.

Sowore, speaking on Arise News TV, accused the government of suppressing dissent, particularly among young Nigerians. “There is no regime in recent history that has victimized young people like the Tinubu regime,” he said, citing past cases of arrests under the Cybercrime Act and the prosecution of underage protesters.

He dismissed claims that Uguamaye violated NYSC regulations, stating, “The NYSC Act, which was promulgated in 1973, does not supersede the fundamental right to free speech.” He also pointed out that corps members actively participate in national affairs, including election duties, and should not be silenced.

Uguamaye’s viral video, in which she lamented rising food prices and called Tinubu a “terrible president,” has sparked debate. She questioned, “I want to know, what is the government doing about this increase?” and suggested that mass public outcry could lead to change.

Sowore criticized the government’s response, arguing that the backlash against Uguamaye was an attempt to stifle criticism. “This young lady is doing the real national service we need at this time,” he asserted.

Despite alleged threats and offers to remain silent, Sowore insists that it is “too late” to suppress her voice, emphasizing that Nigerians have the right to speak up about economic difficulties.
