FCTA Allocates ₦300m for Scholarships, Emphasizes Educational Reforms

To assist indigenous and low-income students in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has begun distributing ₦300 million in scholarships.

This program, which aims to support 16,225 students, was formally launched at the FCT Scholarship Board in Abuja for the 2023/2025 academic year.

FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, noted that although the current funding shows progress compared to previous years, it is just a modest step towards overcoming educational challenges. “We understand that education is crucial for development, and we are dedicated to enhancing this initiative to support more underprivileged students,” Wike communicated via his Chief of Staff, Chidi Amadi.

The Minister voiced worries regarding the insufficient acknowledgment of teachers, highlighting the importance of improved welfare policies. “Teachers deserve greater recognition for their impact on society. Although they may not receive full appreciation at present, we are confident that their contributions will be recognized over time,” he stated.

Dr. Danlami Hayyo from the Secretariat commended the Minister for his dedication to education, noting that more than ₦230 billion has been designated for the sector during Wike’s administration. He mentioned that these resources have been utilized for capital projects, such as renovating schools and constructing new educational facilities in the six Area Councils of the FCT.

Despite budget limitations, the Minister encouraged teachers to stay strong and optimize the resources at their disposal to enhance learning environments. He stressed, “We might not possess all we want immediately, but we should make the most of what we have.”
