ASITU Rejects FG’s Plan to Acquire Land for Cattle Ranching

The Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU) has rejected the Federal Government’s plan to acquire land in Imo and other South East states for cattle ranching under the 2025 national budget.

The union described the move as unjust and provocative, insisting that cattle rearing is a private business that should not receive government funding.

ASITU’s National President, Chief Emeka Diwe, in a statement, questioned why the federal government is prioritizing ranching for private cattle owners while Igbo traders receive no similar support for their businesses. The group argued that South East states already face land scarcity, with increasing demands for agriculture, housing, and infrastructure.

The union also criticized the government for failing to consider the socio-economic impact of the plan on the region. It noted that Igbo businessmen operating in other parts of Nigeria often struggle to acquire land without federal assistance, making the ranching initiative unfair and discriminatory.

ASITU warned that the policy could escalate ethnic tensions and deepen the marginalization of the Igbo people.

The group demanded an immediate halt to the ranching initiative, urging the government to focus on policies that promote fairness and national unity.

“The South East deserves better,” ASITU stated. “We will not accept any policy that takes our land for private interests under any circumstances.”
