The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has received N941 million from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), making it the third-highest beneficiary of the federal student loan scheme.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ session in Jos on Tuesday, NELFUND Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr confirmed the disbursement to nearly 7,000 students, urging tertiary institutions to update student data for smoother application processing.
“I’m delighted to tell you that UNIJOS ranks third in NELFUND disbursement. We have disbursed N941 million on behalf of 6,990 students. This initiative is real—seeing is believing,” Sawyerr stated.
The event, attended by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, state officials, and heads of 13 tertiary institutions, focused on improving the loan process.
Sawyerr announced an upcoming meeting with ICT directors to resolve technical issues affecting loan applications.
Governor Mutfwang praised the initiative, highlighting its impact on education and local economies.
“President Tinubu’s vision is clear—this loan scheme democratizes education and strengthens university communities,” he said.
UNIJOS Vice-Chancellor Prof. Tanko Ishaya confirmed the receipt of funds and urged students to apply.
“This is a game-changer for our institution. Students should seize this opportunity—it’s not a scam,” Ishaya emphasized.
