The Edo State Government has confirmed 15 deaths due to Lassa Fever since its outbreak in December 2024.
The Director of Public Health at the Edo State Ministry of Health, Stephenson Ojeifo, made this known on Tuesday in Benin while addressing public concerns about the state’s response.
According to him, the state has recorded over 1,000 suspected cases, with 103 testing positive. “From the 103 confirmed cases, we have recorded 15 deaths, while others have been treated and discharged,” he stated.
To combat the outbreak, Governor Monday Okpebholo has intensified surveillance and contact tracing efforts, ensuring that necessary resources are available.
However, Mr. Ojeifo attributed the high mortality rate to late referrals, as many patients arrive at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) in critical condition. “The problem is that patients are only referred to ISTH when their condition has deteriorated,” he noted.
He emphasized the importance of early medical intervention, urging residents to seek medical attention for persistent fever so that samples can be tested and treatment can begin promptly. Mr. Ojeifo also called on healthcare providers to avoid delays in referring suspected cases to designated treatment centers.
He warned that any hospital treating Lassa Fever patients without proper authorization would face sanctions. In addition to Lassa Fever, Edo State has recorded 11 suspected cases of Mpox, with five confirmed positives.
However, he assured that there have been no fatalities, as all affected individuals received timely medical care.
