The Lagos State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) to begin work on the 68-kilometer Green Line rail project.
This rail line will link Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, enhancing connectivity across key commercial and residential areas.
Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, described the initiative as a major step toward strengthening the state’s transport infrastructure.
To support the project, the Federal Government has allocated N146.14 billion in counterpart funding as part of the N175.84 billion earmarked for national infrastructure priorities in the 2025 budget.
Beyond the Green Line, Lagos continues to expand its transportation network. The state government completed 36 road projects in 2024, including the Arowojobe Link Bridge in Mende, Maryland, and the Platinum Road in Igbokusu.
Under the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI), new BRT terminals and supporting infrastructure are under construction, further modernizing the city’s transit system.
Omotoso also highlighted the ongoing development of the second phase of the Blue Line rail, which will extend from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, reinforcing the state’s commitment to multi-modal transport solutions.
The completion of the first phase of the Red Line rail project in 2024 marked another milestone for Lagos. This 27-kilometer railway, running from Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo in Lagos, features eight strategically located stations and integrates seamlessly with major transport hubs like Ikeja, Oshodi, and Yaba.
With additional pedestrian and vehicular overpasses, the Red Line aims to ease congestion and improve mobility for millions of residents.
As Lagos advances its infrastructure projects, the Green Line stands out as a transformative initiative that will boost economic growth and urban mobility.
