The Katsina State Government has launched a subsidized shopping program tagged Rumbun Sauki, aimed at alleviating economic hardships faced by workers, retirees, and the general public across the state.

Speaking Wednesday at the launch in Katsina, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described the initiative as a direct response to the rising cost of essential food items, offering much-needed relief to citizens.

“The Rumbun Sauki Initiative is designed to ease the financial burdens of our people by making staple foods such as rice, maize, and flour more affordable through a 10% subsidy,” Governor Radda stated. “Beneficiaries will also have the flexibility to either pay upfront or access these items through an interest-free loan.”

He emphasized that the government has committed N4 billion to ensure the program’s success, enhancing food security and economic stability across the state.

To ensure fairness and accountability, the initiative will be implemented with strict monitoring mechanisms, allowing eligible beneficiaries—including state and local government workers, Local Education Authority staff, and pensioners aged 60 and above—to purchase food items at a limit of one-third of their monthly earnings or pensions.

“This structured approach will prevent hoarding and ensure that as many people as possible benefit from the program,” the Governor added.

To facilitate distribution, several centres have been established—three in Katsina, two in Daura, and two in Funtua—with plans to expand the initiative to all 34 local government areas.

Governor Radda commended key stakeholders, including his Special Adviser on Rural Economy, Engineer Yakubu Nuhu Danja, and the Katsina State Executive Council, for their roles in bringing Rumbun Sauki to reality. He urged beneficiaries to use the program responsibly, reinforcing the government’s commitment to policies that improve livelihoods and create opportunities.

Deputy Governor Malam Faruk Lawal Jobe highlighted the economic impact of the initiative, noting that participating vendors are expected to generate a minimum annual turnover of ₦30 billion from the initial ₦4 billion investment. “Beyond providing immediate relief, this program will stimulate economic activities, create jobs, and help stabilize market prices,” he said.

Special Adviser on Rural Economy, Engr. Yakubu Nuhu Dana further explained that beneficiaries would have the option to pay in full or have the cost deducted from their salary instalments, ensuring financial flexibility while maintaining accountability.

Dignitaries present at the event included the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Nasir Yahaya Daura, Members of the State House of Assembly, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Alhaji Abdulkadir Mamman Nasir, and other senior government officials.
