A tragic building collapse at Odoriwu Estate near Elf Bus Stop, Lagos, has claimed two lives and left six others severely injured.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) swiftly activated its emergency response plans after receiving distress calls at about 2:25 pm on Wednesday. “The bodies of two male casualties were removed from the debris,” confirmed LASEMA’s permanent secretary, Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu,

The injured victims were initially treated by the LRU pre-hospital care unit before being transferred to Marian General Hospital for further medical attention.

In response to the disaster, LASEMA deployed both light and heavy-duty equipment to the site for search and rescue efforts.

“Other operatives of agencies at the scene of the incident for the search and rescue operation include the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the LRU Pre-Hospital Care Unit, and ITEC personnel,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated. These agencies worked together to clear the debris and provide aid to those affected.

The exact cause of the collapse remains unknown, and authorities have launched an investigation to determine the factors responsible for the structural failure.

“The immediate cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained,” Oke-Osanyintolu noted, assuring that further inquiries will be conducted.

The tragic event has raised concerns about building safety regulations in Lagos, highlighting the urgent need for stricter enforcement to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
