The first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda announced her resignation on Monday, informing that her decision was made in order to give peace a chance in the state.

Her sudden resignation was met with immediate re-election as the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly. Lawmakers praised her leadership style, commending her for bringing peace to the Assembly and obeying the rules and regulations of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Meranda’s resignation followed a meeting with high-ranking APC members to navigate the leadership crisis that has plagued the Assembly for seven weeks.

After her resignation, Mudashiru Obasa, the ousted Speaker, was re-elected and took the oath of office as the new Speaker of the Assembly. Obasa’s re-election comes seven weeks after his removal from office.

In a surprise development, the leadership crisis in the Assembly began on January 13, 2025, when Obasa was removed as Lagos speaker by over two-thirds of the 40-member house.

Meranda was immediately elected as the new Speaker, becoming the first female to take charge of the legislative body in the South-West state. However, Obasa rejected his removal and insisted that he remained the speaker until the right thing was done.
