In a bid to address recurring boat accidents, the Federal Government has inaugurated a Special Committee on the Prevention of Boat Mishaps.
Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, who launched the committee, said water transport must be made safer.
“Our waterways are lifelines that connect communities and drive economic growth. However, frequent tragic boat mishaps have caused devastating loss of lives and properties. This situation demands urgent intervention,” Oyetola stated in a statement signed by Director, Information and Public Relations, Anastasia Ogbonna.
The committee, chaired by Bola Oyebamiji, Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, will investigate causes of boat mishaps and recommend solutions. It includes representatives from four states, marine experts, boat operators, and government agencies.
Oyetola stressed that the committee members were carefully selected for their expertise and commitment. “This assignment is of national importance and must be approached with utmost dedication,” he said.
Oyebamiji, responding on behalf of the committee, commended Oyetola’s leadership. “Since your appointment, Sir, you have relentlessly worked for a better maritime sector. We assure you that the confidence reposed in us will not be betrayed,” he pledged.
