The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced plans to unveil the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine in Anambra State in September.
According to the WHO Anambra Coordinator, Bonos Mohammed, the MR vaccine is a combination vaccine that protects against two contagious diseases that can cause severe complications.
Mohammed emphasized the importance of the vaccine, stating that “Measles causes pneumonia, brain swelling and death. Therefore, children aged nine months to 14 years should be vaccinated as the vaccine is safe with over 50 years of global use.”
Mohammed also highlighted the risks associated with not vaccinating children, saying “Unvaccinated children are at risk of contracting and spreading the diseases, which could lead to outbreaks and complications in children and pregnant women.”
He encouraged women to educate mothers in their communities about the vaccine to prevent hesitancy when it is introduced in September.
The Wife of Anambra Governor, Nonye Soludo, also spoke at the event, expressing concern over the low uptake of immunization in the state and urging mothers to prioritize their children’s health.
Commissioner for Health, Afam Obidike, Anambra, announced that the ministry would intensify awareness in communities to educate mothers about the MR vaccine.
He also reminded mothers that immunization is free of charge in the state’s health facilities and encouraged them to report any exploitation by health workers.
As the WHO works to reduce the incidence of measles and rubella, the introduction of the MR vaccine in Anambra State is a crucial step towards protecting the health and well-being of children in the region.
