Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for an independent and transparent investigation into the sexual harassment, intimidation, and mistreatment allegations leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Atiku, in a statement on Friday expressed deep concern over the allegations, emphasizing that the issue must not be dismissed. He stressed that the Nigerian Senate, as a symbol of democracy, must uphold the highest standards of integrity and accountability.

“These allegations are grave and deserve a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation,” Atiku said.

“The Nigerian Senate represents the voice of the people. Those who serve in it—especially its leadership—must uphold the highest standards of integrity, dignity, and respect, both for their office and for the Nigerian citizens they serve.”

The allegations against Akpabio have sparked national debate, with growing calls for the Senate and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive action. Many believe that failing to address the claims properly would send the wrong message about Nigeria’s commitment to justice and gender equality.

The controversy has also reignited discussions about the challenges women face in governance. With only four female senators in the Upper Chamber, concerns have been raised about the safety and inclusiveness of Nigeria’s political environment.

“Sexual harassment in the workplace is a significant barrier to women’s advancement and, by extension, the nation’s progress. Allegations of such misconduct should never be simply dismissed,” Atiku added, warning that the case could set a dangerous precedent for how female legislators are treated in Nigeria.

The former Vice President further noted that as the third most powerful figure in the country, the Senate President should embody unimpeachable character and serve as a protector of women’s rights through legislation.

Atiku urged the federal government to ensure a fair and transparent probe, stating that the handling of this matter will determine Nigeria’s seriousness in promoting justice, accountability, and gender inclusivity.

“The Senate must not be a place where female legislators fear harassment or intimidation,” he said. “This moment demands careful and principled action to uphold the integrity of our institutions and ensure that every Nigerian, regardless of gender, is treated with dignity and respect.”

As Nigerians await an official response, the pressure is mounting on the government and the Senate leadership to act decisively. Observers warn that failure to conduct a credible inquiry could further erode public trust in the nation’s political institutions.
