The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has charged its newly promoted Comptrollers to uphold integrity, prioritize the welfare of officers, and enhance service efficiency as they assume higher responsibilities.
Speaking at a five-day Leadership Retreat in Abuja, Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, emphasized the critical role of Comptrollers in policy implementation and decision-making.
He reminded them that their new rank places them in key leadership positions. “For all you know, this is the last promotable rank you get. You must understand your role at this level and how it impacts the Service,” Adeniyi said.
He further urged the officers to foster a positive work environment, stressing that leadership requires a balance of technical expertise and responsibility. “You have to be interested in the welfare of your staff members. Protect the dignity of the Service and ensure continuous training for officers under your command,” he added.
Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs (DCG) Sulaiman Chiroma, the Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), described the retreat as a strategic investment in leadership development. “As Comptrollers, you are pivotal in trade facilitation, revenue generation, and national security. This training will equip you with the tools to excel,” he stated.
The retreat featured lectures on stakeholder management, media relations, ethics, and national security. Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, the NCS spokesperson, advised the officers to maintain transparency in media engagements. “A proactive approach in communication fosters trust with stakeholders and strengthens public confidence in Customs operations,” he noted.
Closing the retreat, DCG Greg Itotoh congratulated the Comptrollers and urged them to apply the knowledge gained in their commands. “The Service expects you to demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and efficiency in all your duties,” he concluded.
