FG Commits to Promoting Quality Education, Reduce Dropout Rate

The Federal Government on Monday reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening quality basic education across the nation, emphasising urgent action to reduce the growing number of out-of-school children.

Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, speaking at a three-day Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) meeting in Abuja, highlighted the administration’s determination to transform the sector.

“I would like to assure you of the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting quality education to inspire renewed hope,” said Alausa, represented by his Senior Special Assistant, Dr. Ismaila Adiatu. “We are prioritising qualitative basic education as the foundation of national development.”

Alausa noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed stakeholders to accelerate efforts in returning children to classrooms and enhancing educational standards.

The initiative, themed Strengthening Collaboration for Quality Basic Education Delivery in Nigeria, gathered education officials from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

UBEC Executive Secretary, Hajiya Aisha Garba, noted the necessity of collaborative efforts to address deficiencies in the education sector. “Nigeria still struggles with poor-quality education at the basic level. We must work together to tackle challenges in financing, infrastructure, and teacher quality,” she stated.

Alausa announced the establishment of a committee to categorise schools nationwide, ensuring targeted interventions where needed. “These efforts align with Mr. President’s ‘Education for Renewed Hope’ initiative, preparing Nigerian youth for the 21st-century economy.”
