The Life and Times of Prof. Tom Adaba

Dr. Tom Adaba, a pioneering figure in Nigeria’s broadcast industry, passed away at the age of 82 on Saturday.
His death was confirmed by his daughter, Dr. Inya Ode. A man of many firsts, Adaba left an indelible mark on the nation’s media landscape and academia.

Born in Ebiraland, Kogi State, Dr. Adaba pursued a distinguished academic career, culminating in his Ph.D. from the University of Jos in 1989. Notably, he was the first Ph.D. holder produced by the university’s Department of Theatre Arts.

His academic journey also saw him serve as the first Principal of the NTA Television College in Jos, Plateau State, from 1980 to 1987. This role positioned him at the forefront of media education in Nigeria, shaping a generation of broadcasters.

His most impactful contribution came in 1992 when he was appointed the pioneer Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). During his tenure, he played a crucial role in the deregulation of Nigeria’s broadcast industry under the military administration of General Ibrahim Babangida. This move paved the way for private participation in the media sector, transforming the industry into the vibrant and diverse landscape it is today.

Beyond his work with NBC, Dr. Adaba was a board member of DAAR Communications PLC, the media conglomerate behind Africa Independent Television (AIT), Raypower FM, and Faaji Radio. His influence extended beyond broadcasting; he was also a respected community leader in Ebiraland and a devout Catholic, embodying values of service and faith.

Dr. Tom Adaba is survived by his wife of 58 years, Theresa Aaze Adaba, their children, and great-grandchildren. His legacy in education, media, and community leadership remains a guiding light for future generations.
