President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has established two new federal universities: the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti and the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State.
The Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, disclosed the news following the signing of accompanying legislation at the State House on Thursday.
In a statement released on Thursday, titled “NASS Secures Presidential Assent to Federal Universities in Ekiti, Osun,” the Directorate of Media and Public Affairs from the Office of the Senate Leader noted Bamidele’s emphasis on the vital contribution these universities will make to national development.
“The approval marks a defining milestone for our country,” Bamidele asserts. He believes these institutions will bridge the knowledge gap in science, technology, and agricultural innovation, emphasising their potential for driving national development.
Earlier this year, the Senate passed the necessary bills, which Bamidele championed, paving the way for their approval by the House of Representatives and ultimately, the President.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, previously advocated for these universities, indicating they would play crucial roles in addressing pressing issues like food insecurity and climate change. “The Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences will focus on technology-driven education and research, arming graduates with 21st-century skills in engineering and digital innovation,” Alausa notes.
He highlights that this institution will evolve into a hub for innovative solutions in environmental management, promoting sustainability in urban development. “We are creating a research platform that aligns with our commitment to global environmental goals,” he states.
Meanwhile, the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies is poised to advance agricultural research and innovation, essential for Nigeria’s food security. “This university will pioneer improved farming techniques and agro-processing methods,” Alausa explains, further stating its potential to stimulate economic growth and entrepreneurship in rural communities.
Bamidele commends the President for his commitment to knowledge-based national development, stating, “This decision will create a ripple effect, benefiting the entire country.”
