Rivers Launches 2nd Round of ‘Big Catch-Up’ Immunization Campaign

In a renewed effort to reduce child mortality and combat vaccine-preventable diseases, the Rivers State Government has launched the second round of its Big Catch-Up immunization campaign. The initiative, running from February 21 to 26, 2025, aims to close vaccination gaps and ensure children under five receive life-saving vaccines.

The Rivers State Primary Health Care (PHC) agency announced the campaign on Thursday via its official handle on X, emphasizing the need for public participation.

Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh, highlighted the importance of the campaign, stating, “Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to protect children from disease. This campaign is a vital step toward achieving herd immunity and safeguarding our communities.”

The immunization drive will be conducted across 11 local government areas, including Andoni, Port Harcourt, Asari-Toru, Bonny, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Ahoada West, Akuku-Toru, Abua/Odual, Degema, Etche, and Emohua. Vaccines will be administered at primary healthcare centers and designated vaccination sites within these areas.

Health officials have urged parents and caregivers to take advantage of the campaign to protect their children. A PHC representative stressed, “We need everyone’s support. Immunizing your children is a crucial step in preventing disease outbreaks and safeguarding their health.”

The Big Catch-Up campaign is part of the state government’s broader strategy to enhance routine immunization coverage and protect children from preventable illnesses.
