ICPC to Launch Anti-Corruption Programme for LGs Amidst as Push for Grassroots Transparency Intensifies

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is set to formally launch the Accountability and Corruption Prevention Programme for Local Governments (CPP-LG) to curb systemic corruption and enhance transparency at the grassroots level.

This move comes in response to recent legal affirmations of local government autonomy, which are expected to strengthen financial independence and operational efficiency.

According to a statement by FSI, Director of Public Enlightenment and Education and spokesperson for the Commission, Demola Bakare, on Thursday, ICPC Chairman Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, announced the initiative during a summit organized by the Gombe State government on “Local Government Autonomy, Fiscal Responsibility, and Sustainable Development.”

Dr. Aliyu, in his presentation titled “Enhancing Transparency and Accountability in Local Governance: Strategies for Combating Corruption in Nigeria,” decried the widespread embezzlement, nepotism, contract inflation, and resource misallocation that have long weakened local governance. “Systemic corruption undermines the effectiveness of local government functions, leading to inefficiencies, misallocation of resources, and eroded public trust,” he stated.

To address these challenges, the ICPC has introduced measures such as regular audits, public reporting, and increased citizen participation. “By fortifying legal frameworks, leveraging technology, and encouraging civic engagement, Nigeria can create an environment where integrity thrives,” Dr. Aliyu noted.

The ICPC boss emphasized that collective action is crucial in the fight against corruption, urging collaboration between government agencies, civil society organizations, the private sector, and the international community. “The fight against corruption demands collective action and unwavering dedication. Though the journey may be challenging, the rewards of a corruption-free society where resources are utilized for the public good are immeasurable,” he concluded.

The CPP-LG is part of ICPC’s broader strategy to institutionalize accountability at the local level, ensuring that public funds are used for the benefit of communities rather than siphoned through corrupt practices.
