Concrete Roads: Umahi Champions Durable Solution for Flood-Prone Areas

The Minister of Works, Sen. (Engr.) David Nweze Umahi, has reaffirmed that Nigeria’s flood-prone areas and regions with high water tables will greatly benefit from the adoption of continuous reinforcement concrete pavement (CRCP) technology.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by Director of Press and Public Relations, Mohammed  Ahmed, Umahi highlighted the advantages of concrete roads over asphalt during an inspection tour of ongoing road projects in Delta State on Tuesday. He stated, ” Concrete is good for areas that experience double rainfall maxima. Roads built with concrete will last between fifty to a hundred years, while asphaltic ones will fall within ten. Concrete is the solution to flood-density roads.”.

The Minister’s visit covered the 2.46-kilometre Special Intervention Project on the East-West Road, currently being reconstructed by M/S Truetech Global Investment Services Limited. He also inspected other major projects, including the dualization of the 110.63-kilometre Sapele–Agbor–Ewu Road by CGC (Nig) Ltd and the 83.3-kilometre rehabilitation of the Asaba-Agbor Dual Carriageway by Hartland (Nig.) Ltd.

He  lauded the contractors for the progress made, urging them to speed up completion as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is keen on alleviating the difficulties faced by road users. “Mr. President is eager to see these projects completed because he does not want Nigerians to suffer,” Umahi stated, urging local communities and motorists to be patient and cooperate with contractors as work progresses.
